IN 2013, we stumbled upon a unique planning opportunity. We had a long-term client (former pro-athlete) retire at the age of 31 with a net worth of $10 million and no debt. While this sounds like a good problem to have, it turned out that he was having difficulty with the lifestyle transition of adjusting to life after the NFL. He needed a second career.
In looking at his portfolio of stocks and bonds, it turns out that he also had a need for private equity. We decided to solve both problems by advising the client to start a business. Because he had no prior business experience, we suggested franchising. We searched high and low for a concept that he was passionate about, and landed on fitness for two reasons:
As a former football player, he spent his whole life in the gym and was both passionate and an expert in the field
We felt we could leverage his personal brand to help the business grow.
After negotiating a favorable deal with a “big box” fitness franchisor, we then paired him up with an operating partner with a long track-record of success as a gym operator. The client was so pleased, he asked us to stay on the project as the outsourced CFO and he compensated us with sweat equity.
As we told other non-athlete clients this story, we found there was a significant interest in franchising. Within five years, we built a total of five fitness franchise locations across multiple concepts and states; coupled with three dry cleaner franchise locations. We have a total of 21 franchise locations currently under development in several states.
To-date we have a backlog individuals who want to learn more about franchising and need a “partner” in smart execution from the FDD to the Grand Opening. We are regularly invited to speak at conferences across the country sharing the honest message of what franchising really is, and how to do it the right way.
ALLAN BOOMER | MANAGING PARTNER
Allan has been in the financial industry for over 20 years, and has spent the bulk of his career advising institutional clients, and wealthy families. Prior to founding Momentum Advisors, Allan spent 7 years at Goldman Sachs, where he was a Vice President in the firm's Private Wealth Management group. While at Goldman, he managed a $450 million investment portfolio on a team that oversaw $7 billion in client assets. Allan began his career at Merrill Lynch in 1995.
Allan is the Chairman of the Finance and Investment Committee of Raritan Valley Community College Foundation, Past Chairman of the NYU Stern Alumni Council, and Chairman of the Good Shepherd Real Estate Corporation, a faith-based non-profit community development organization. He previously served on the Board of Overseers at NYU Stern.
Allan holds an MBA from the NYU Stern School of Business, where he was a Robert Toigo Fellow, and a BS from Morgan State University.
TIFFANY HAWKINS | MANAGING DIRECTOR
Tiffany Hawkins is the Head of Business Development for Momentum Advisors. She has over 12 years of expertise in market research, client engagement and corporate investment strategy working alongside several Fortune 100 companies on identifying financial growth opportunities in the market.
Prior to joining Momentum Advisors, Tiffany spent 8 years managing the consumer-facing investments of high-profile public personas and their notable for-profit business enterprises. Her investment universe includes everything from restaurants to fitness, dry cleaning, and wellness; which have proven consumer appeal and great ROI to the client.
Tiffany currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Association of African-American Advisors (Quad-A) and the National Franchise Advisory Council for ZIPS Dry Cleaners.
Tiffany holds two Bachelors’ degree from Morgan State University specializing in Communication Studies and Statistical Research. Tiffany and Allan host a weekly radio show on finance, franchising and investments on SiriusXM, called The Momentum Advisors.
